California has always had its own distinctive and influential voice across all genres of the arts: music, literature, and fine art. These works reflect the various movements associated with the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles: L.A. Cool School, Light and Space and Finish Fetish, as well as their City of Angels contemporaries working at galleries such as the Brockman Gallery.
In Northern California, there were also the Bay Area Abstract Expressionists and who practiced their own take on this distinctly American movement.
