Cornelius Annor Ghana, b. 1990
"I want people to change their view about our beautiful continent."
- Cornelius Annor
Cornelius Annor was born in 1990 in Accra, Ghana, and studied at the Ghanatta College of Art and Design.
Annor's intimate scenes of domestic interiors and community life on large-scale canvases come alive through Annor’s detailed rendering of facial expression and body language. The artist's figurative works are typically set in domestic interiors or spaces of community partage, which incorporate collage Ghanain textile patterns. This lends a textural quality to his work -- and his now signature style is always unexpected in its use of vibrant patterns for the clothing of his figuresor the muted atmospheric background tones achieved by transferring the dye from fabric onto the canvas.
Citing his own family history as well as photography as his sources of inspiration, Annor aims to make the viewer nostalgic for unfamiliar memories.
His work has been featured in exhibitions in Accra, London, and New York, and in the permanent collections of The Brooklyn Museum, the Norton Museum, the Bunker Artspace, West Palm Beach, the ICA Miami, and Espacio Tacuari, Buenos Aires.
Annor lives and works in Ghana, where he established C.Annor studio, a space dedicated to encouraging and supporting young artists.
