One the best exhibitions I saw in 2019 was right here in Santa Fe:

Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist.

Aside from the absolute beauty and impact of these paintings, I was taken by the fact that most of Pelton’s mature work was done as a part of her spiritual practice and were not painted for exhibition or commercial purposes. How does the artist’s connection to her work influence our connection to her work?

I was in New York the first week of March 2020 and hoped to catch the opening of the exhibition at its next venue, the Whitney Museum of American Art, but decided to leave early as the Coronavirus storm was quickly approaching. The exhibition opened on 13 March, but quickly closed a few short days later. We are looking forward to the exhibition opening later this Summer and then finishing it’s tour at the Palms Spring Art Museum this Fall.

A SURPRISE IN SANTA FE

VENICE ON MY MIND

This is one of the many reasons I love Venice.

When I was there in October last year (2019) for the Biennale, I decide to take a train to Florence to see a dear friend who is married to a Florentina and has been living there for many years. He had recently visited me in Santa Fe and I was excited to see him again so soon. As I approached the train station in the early morning, here was a gathering of women in pink. They were preparing to walk for breast cancer awareness. After several days of plowing through the exhibits at Arsenale and Giardini, as well as the countless palazzos hosting magnificent events and exhibits (like the Dubuffet exhibit at Palazzo Franchetti, below) I was taken by the normalcy of regular people walking in their city for a cause early one morning. Venice is full of such contrasts. Highly touristed and highly local at the same time.

I live in a tourist town to some degree. During the high season of summer when we host the world’s largest folk art market in July, and later in the summer the annual Indian Market, as well as the Santa Fe Opera and many other events, the city doubles in size and it can feel like you are a stranger in your own town. But once off the main road and out of the downtown area, there are the simple rituals of people gathering to walk or hike or work in their gardens.

Several days after I left Venice…maybe a week later… the city flooded. Then they were hit by the Coronavirus a few months later. And just recently I heard of an explosion at an industrial plant on the edge of the city which forced the residents to keep their windows closed to protect them from the noxious fumes covering the city like a toxic blanket.

And now they have cancelled the 2021 edition of the Biennale for only the fourth time in its 125 year history.

Santa Fe is an art city, too. But there is also so much more. People come for the art or the food or the culture and are somehow transformed. They form a connection with it all and what is left is a feeling that is indescribable. Ineffable, but not unknown.

I must think about Venice at times the way other people think about Santa Fe or Paris or any other place they have visited and been inspired. You create your own story and own connection in a way that doesn’t just live in memory. It lives in you heart. I can’t wait to return.

SEEING WHAT IS INVISIBLE

If we are only trained to see as we are taught, then we can only see what and how we have been given permission to see. That’s why we need art. Because vision is the art of seeing what is invisible.

When you look at an artwork, what you see if often dictated by what you’ve read about the artist, or about the movement that the artist is associated with. Even reading the wall label or listening to the audio guide will give you some idea of what you are looking at and impose a bias. People will ask “what is this supposed to be?” when looking at an abstract painting. Or they will want to know the story depicted in an allegorical painting in order to understand it.

But a work of art is first what it is because of what the artist brings to the effort. When we are able to see art as an expression of the artist’s spirit as revealed within these other frameworks, then we begin to see what the artwork truly is.

The artwork is created, but it does not live in the artist’s studio. It is exhibited, or it may be sold — for artists need to eat and have shelter and pay for their ambitions, too. But its real life is in the connection between the viewer and the artwork.

What is vision? There is the vision of seeing what is not seen. There are also the deities Perception and Intuition. And there is a place where these all intersect. I want to explore this place with an eye to our experience with Art, with the Art Market and Connossieurship.
